'Thank You Chickens' Shadow Box

$2,950.00

‘Thank You Chickens’.

24” x 10”.

Hand carved Peacock tail feather. The big colorful display feathers actually grow on the bird’s back.

Built sturdily to last, this shadow box is made with legal-to-have, mostly shed feathers, on the finest archival cotton papers. Framed in quality, simple black lacquered wood frames with UV or museum acrylic, ready to hang.

Some chickens get to run around in small flocks, eat bugs, scratch around, and generally have pretty good lives. Others are caged on top of each other for maximum production. They have terrible lives. But regardless, I often eat their eggs even though the eggs from birds that get to nibble on grass and bugs taste better. I made this piece because I am grateful that chickens make eggs for us. Thank you chickens.

Feathers carved into intricate art by cutting them into detailed shapes and arranging the cutouts into scenes that celebrate the life and flight of birds.

Maynard works with feathers from turkeys, parrots, peacocks, owls and other birds. He crafts them into scenes that are displayed in his world-renowned shadow boxes. A conservationist at heart, Maynard’s feathers are legally obtained. Many of the feathers are naturally shed and are legal to have and sell. The feathers colors are not altered in any way.

Feathers represent flight, transformation, and a bridge between our present lives and our dreams. Since feathers are universal symbols these qualities, Maynard’s art speaks to many people’s longings as well as to people who revere birds.

Maynard’s work is included in collections and publications in North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. His book, Feathers, Form & Function, highlights his work and tells stories about what feathers are, what roles they fill for birds, and why people find them alluring. He is working on another book or two.

A totem is a Northwest indigenous way of symbolizing creatures that are important in their lives. Chickens are so important in our lives for their eggs and meat that I feel I owe them a bit of gratitude.
